Servers

Titan

The Skirball Institute maintains a fileserver for the use of non-institute members needing to temporarily store or submit files to Media Services. Appearing as "Titan" in the institute's 3rd floor AppleShare zone, and as titan.skb.med.nyu.edu in the NYUMC internet domain, this server provides a convenient but completely unprotected staging area for temporary files entering or leaving the Media Services.
This server is offered as a courtesy only; the Skirball Institute makes no representations as to the security or privacy of any images, documents or other files uploaded to it. All files on this server are subject to immediate removal or alteration without notice.

Storing Files on Titan

Files may be placed in Park_Till_5am for temporary storage using Media Services File Upload, but will be automatically deleted at 5:00am every morning. Files in makeslides and makefujix disappear immediately as they are removed for processing.

Moving Files via Titan

An internet drop folder as well as the more convenient File Upload service is available to individuals wishing to upload large files (images, presentations, videos, etc.) to the NYU School of Medicine network. Files uploaded to the campus using the drop folder will appear in Titan's Temporary_Presentations directory.

Submitting Files to makeslides and makefujix via Titan

Properly named files may be submitted to Titan for output as 35mm slides or digital photographs.

Although files in EPS, EPSF, TIFF or PPT formats are preferred, SCRAP and PICT files may also be submitted for output as 35mm slides.

Remember to use a file name of the form "lastname.image.color.type" where "lastname" is your last name; "image" is a short term enabling you to distinguish one file from another; "color" indicates the background color of the slide (either "blk" for black, "wht" for white, or "col" for anything else) and "type" is either"eps", "tif", "scrap", "ppt" or "pict". The "color" information may be omitted from files placed in makefujix .

The file names must be less than 27 characters long, entirely in lowercase and contain no spaces or non-alphabetic characters such as slashes, colons, parentheses, etc.

Every file must be properly named, even if contained in a properly named folder.

Your files will DISAPPEAR from makeslides and makefuijx almost as soon as they arrive! This is normal, and indicates that processing has begun.

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE CHANGES TO YOUR FILES OR RENAME THEM ONCE THEY HAVE BEEN UPLOADED, SO NAME THEM PROPERLY FROM THE START.

Connecting to Titan Via ftp

  1. Opening an ftp window to makeslides or makefujix by clicking on these links and simply dragging files into it. NOTE: Windows users MUST use Internet Explorer (version 5.x); Macintosh users MUST use Netscape (version 4.x).
  2. Opening an ftp window in a web browser and selecting the Upload File... item in the File menu of the browser.
  3. Use an ftp utility such as Fetch or Cute ftp.
