WARNING: Please read about SpamAssassin on Saturn before
following these instructions! It's important to understand how it works
to avoid possible loss of legitimate
email messages!
By
using the
SpamAssassin headers it's possible to configure Entourage to filter
out suspected spam and dump it to a separate folder. Please note:
do not delete the messages permanently! You have to check the spam
folder for legitimate emails that might have been labeled as spam
and delete the messages manually! Take the above WARNING seriously
and read about SpamAssassin first!!!
Step
by step instructions: hot to create a spam filtering Rule in Entourage
In
order to allow Entourage to remove the suspected spam messages
from your Inbox you have to create a new folder where these messages
will
be dumped into. The easiest way is to hold the Control key on your
keyboard while clicking on your Saturn account. This is the same
as using the right mouse button if you have one. This will bring
up a contextual menu as seen on the screenshot on the right. Select
"New Folder" from the menu...
The
default name is "untitled folder", please rename it "spam" and
click The "Create" button...
You
should see now a new folder called "spam" under your Saturn account
in Entourage.
Once
you created the folder you can proceed now to create the rule.
A rule consists of two parts, a criterion and an action. The action
will be performed based on one criterion or multiple criteria.
Go to the "Tools" menu and select "Rules"...
The
"Rules" window will open. Click on the "New" button
to create a new rule and select "Mail (POP)" or "Mail (IMAP)" depending
on how
your Saturn account in Entourage was set up. In our example we're
using IMAP. If you're not sure go to the "Tools" menu->Accounts and see what it says next to your email account.
The "Edit Rule" window will open. First, name the rule "Spam
Assassin". It doesn't really matter how you name it though.
As you remember from the SpamAssassin introduction
the goal is to create a rule that will look in the message header
for "SpamAssassin says this is SPAM" and then move that
message to your "spam" folder. Therefore our criterion
is the occurrence of that sentence somewhere in the header and
our action
is moving
that message
to the
"spam"
folder.
Start by adding a criterion then by clicking on the "+
Add Criterion" menu.
...so
select "Any header" from the "+ Add Criterion" menu,
then...
...type,
or just copy and paste "SpamAssassin says this is SPAM" -
without the quotes and no space in SpamAssassin into the criterion text box, and...
...
select "if all criteria are met" from the "Execute" menu.
You have finished creating the criterion...
...
now let's create the resulting action. Click the "+Add Action"
menu and select "Move message".
Now
select the destination folder from the second drop-down menu. Click
on the menu and select "Choose folder..."
Another
window will open that will allow you to select the "spam" folder
that you have created under your Saturn account. Click on that
folder, click the "Choose" button. This will bring you
back to the "Edit Rule" window. You are now done so close
the window and save the rule if asked to do so.
If there are any other criteria or actions in your Rule you will
have to delete them from the"Edit Rule" window. You will
not be able to do that until you close and save the Rule. Then
you can
edit
the
Rule
again and
remove the extra/empty criteria and actions.
You
can edit the Rules at any time by selecting them and clicking the
Edit button above.
For example, you may want to add another action such as "Mark
message as read", or change the message category, etc.
Your
rule is finished. It will run on any new messages from now on.
To test it you can manually run it on your existing Inbox. Select
all messages in your Inbox, Control-click on them and choose "Apply
Rule" -> "Spam Assassin" as shown on the right.
This may take a while. Once it's finished you will notice that
there may be less messages in your folder. They have been moved
to your "spam" folder. Open your spam folder, it'll probably
look something
like
mine:)
You can now delete the spam but look out for some legitimate emails
that might have ended up there! You can simply drag them back
to your Inbox.
