Setting up Eudora - Creating Your Settings
The first thing you should do is to quit Eudora Light and drag the Eudora Folder to the desktop to keep it safe in case someone has already used it to store their account information. Later you will learn how to find if it contains someone else's settings. Now, open Eudora Light again. Notice that a blank Settings window has opened and a new Eudora Folder has been created in the System Folder

The left side of the window contains different groups of options to be set up: Personal Information, Hosts, etc.
Click on the Getting Started icon in the left part of the window. Then enter your Real name in the Real name field. Enter your complete Saturn or popmail e-mail address in the POP account field. Leave the Return address field blank and make sure that TCP/IP radio button is checked.
Next, click on the Personal Information icon on the left. Again, enter your e-mail address in the POP account field (if it's not there already) and your real name in the Real name field. Leave the other two fields blank.
xClick on Hosts icon on the left. Once again, enter your e-mail address in the POP account field (if it's not there already).

Enter saturn.med.nyu.edu in the SMTP field and ldap.med.nyu.edu in the Ph and Finger fields.

Leave other options at their default values.
x
Click on Checking Mail icon on the left. Once again, enter your e-mail address in the POP account field.

If you want Eudora to check for your mail automatically, check the box and enter the number of minutes in the box. In the example on the right Eudora will check for new mail every 10 minutes. However, if you only check your mail manually this option should not be check.

Make sure that the Save password box is not checked! If this box is checked Eudora WILL NOT ask for your password next time it checks the e-mail and anyone can download your mail.

PLEASE CHECK THE LEAVE MESSAGES ON THE SERVER BOX and set the value to no more than 14 days. This is to prserve the disk space. Also, as the size of your mailbox grows Eudora will take longer and longer to read your inbox and eventually you will start having problems checking your email.

Leave other options as shown in the example on the right.
Click on the Sending Mail icon on the left and enter saturn.med.nyu.edu in the SMTP server field, leave the other two fields blank.
Click on the Attachments icon on the left.

Do you remember the Attachments Folder you found in the Eudora Folder.

Click on the long, blank button and a Finder dialog window will open.
Navigate to you Attachments Folder, highlight it cnd click on the Use Folder button.

All files sent to you as attachments will be saved in this folder.
The last thing you want to do is to set your Getting Attention settings. This will tell Eudora how to notify you if there is a new mail. This is actually only useful if you have set Eudora to check for messages automatically.

Click the OK button to save the settings and exit the window.

You have finished setting up your Eudora!

You can type Command-M now or choose Check Mail from the File menu.
If you are the only Eudora user on this computer you may leave the Eudora Folder in your System Folder. If others share Eudora with you you should move the Eudora folder to another, safe location.

Proceed to the next page to find out where you should keep your Eudora Folder and why.
