Setting up Entourage 2004 for OSX as IMAP client to check your Saturn email - page 1 of 3
Updated on October 20th, 2006 - a major and confusing error on page 3 (SSL settings) was corrected, so if you've printed this page out for reference prior to this date please re-print it
These instructions will show you how to configure Entourage 2004 as IMAP client to check your Saturn email. These instructions will also work with Entourage X, but the windows may look slightly different. You can also use these settings as a reference to set up any other email client. The screens were taken using Entourage 2004 running under Mac OSX version 10.4.7. Please keep in mind that the settings must be configured exactly as shown. Even though not all settings are required to be entered exactly, such as your real name, most of them are crucial and one spelling error, one missing letter, digit or character will prevent Entourage from working properly or cause it to fail altogether and/or result in errors.
All your email resides in your Saturn home directory in a folder called mail. Don't rename, don't move, don't delete that folder or your email will be gone!
If you have already been using Entourage configured either as POP for Saturn or for another email account you can simply add a New Account. Go to the Tools menu, select Accounts as shown on this screenshot. If you're starting from scratch please skip to this step below.
Click New and select Mail... Then skip the next two steps and go to this step.
If you're starting from scratch this is the first step - don't do this if you are adding a new account!
Please make sure that none of the Microsoft Office programs are opened. This includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Entourage and Office Notifications.
Go to your Documents folder and find a folder called Microsoft User Data...
Rename the Microsoft User Data folder to Microsoft User Data - old... Now start up Entourage.
Starting up Entourage after renaming the Microsoft User Data folder will cause it to blank out and start as if it was installed for the first time, so it'll automatically present you with Entourage Setup Assistant. At this time you will have the option to import your email from another email program. We will cover importing email in another help document. So for now we're assuming you have nothing to import, so please select the first option as shown on the right. You can always import email from your old program at a later time.
Please refer to this webpage for instructions on importing emails, signtaures, etc. from Entourage X.
This is the Set Up a Mail Account window. You will start at this stage if you're adding a New Account as well. Do not check the My account is on an Exchange server option! Type in your FULL email address and click the right arrow (blue triangle on the bottom right) to continue...
Entourage will attempt to detect and configure your email account automatically at this stage and this would normally fail unless your account is Hotmal, MSN or some other server that Entourage recognizes. So ignore this message and click the right arrow to continue...
In this step you will enter your real name under Your name. This is your real name, not your email or nickname, this is the name your email will appear to be coming from. Your email address should be already entered in under E-mail address, if not re-enter it at this time. Your Account ID is your Saturn username, the part before the @ sign. Type in your password and check the Save password in MacOSX keychain option. This will make the setup easier and you can always uncheck this option in the future. Type saturn.med.nyu.edu as Incoming mail server. If you're configuring your computer in Skirball Institute enter saturn.med.nyu.edu as your Outgoing mail server as well. However, if you're on NYUMC campus but outside of Skirball type smtp.med.nyu.edu instead for the outgoing server name. If you're configuring your computer at home or at another location you will need to find out what your local outgoing (a.k.a. SMTP) server is. Call your DSL, cable or dial up service provider to find out or contact the local IT....
Under Incoming mail server type click and chose IMAP from the drop down menu. Click the right arrow to continue...
You can click the Verify My Settings button now. This is not a critical step as there are more settings to complete but if the verification succeeds you'll know you've configured most of the setting properly so far.
This screenshot shows successful verification. if it failed click the left arrow to go back and double check all the settings so far. Then click the right arrow to continue...
In this step you can give the account a descriptive name, this can be anything you'd like. We recommend naming it Skirball, as it'll make the instructions easier to follow. The name can be changed at any time. Leave both checkboxes checked and click the Finish button. But you're not finished yet!
Most likely you will get this message now. If not, just proceed to the next page. You have few more steps before Entourage will work.
