As of September
1st 2005, we will shut down access for email clients outside the NYUMC
firewall which do not use SSL to
check email. In order to be extra safe it is wise to enable this setup
even if you check email from inside the institute!
Most current email
clients support SSL for checking email from outside the firewall. Below
you will find instructions for Eudora, Entourage, Mozilla Thunderbird and
Outlook Express.
IMPORTANT NOTES and FAQs:
Enable SSL only for the incoming POP or IMAP server which is saturn.med.nyu.edu.
DO NOT enable SSL for the outgoing SMTP server as that will be your ISP
(TimeWarner, Earthlink, Verizon, etc.) server, NOT Saturn and they may
or may not require SSL.
You MUST enable SSL - it's not just an option - for incoming email by Sep
1st OR YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO READ YOUR SATURN EMAIL from the outside
of NYUMC after Sep 1! You may need to upgrade your email program to the
newest version.
You CAN enable SSL for your email program in Skirball or within NYUMC,
it won't hurt, it encrypts your password, adds extra protection and doesn't
slow the email down.
If you read your email using the
IMP WebPage (http://saturn.med.nyu.edu/mail or http://imp.med.nyu.edu)
you don't need to change any setting as the IMP application uses SSL already.
Version Eudora 6.2.1 and up can be set up to use the SSL by:
