The mechanism used to generate an IP address is similar to the scheme for determining an IP address on a Windows 98, Windows 2000 or Windows XP system in an environment that does not have a DHCP or BOOTP server. The algorithm for generating the IP address is to randomly generate an address in the 169.254.x.x reserved address range, then determine if it is in use on the network. If the address is in use, another address in the range will be generated. This process is repeated until a unique address is generated. CAUTION: The resulting address should not be used on the Internet. For additional information, please see Internet Draft DHC-IPV4-AUTOCONFIG by R. Troll entitled "Automatically Choosing an IP Address in an Ad-Hoc IPv4 Network". How do I see additional NDS trees? The HP Install Network Printer wizard only provides support for the NDS tree the user is currently logged into. If a different tree is desired, exit the application, change your login to the desired tree, and restart the application. Why don't I have a selection for a Novell communication mode? The HP Install Network Printer wizard relies upon several files that ship with the Novell Client for your particular Windows version. The wizard uses these files to verify the appropriate permissions. If any of the necessary files are missing, or outdated, the Novell print path will not be available (although other valid communication modes will be displayed). If a Novell print path is not available when you think one should be, try upgrading your Novell client software to a newer version. Does the HP Install Network Printer Wizard support TCP/IP printing on NetWare 5.x? In order to create NDS queues, an IPX connection with a login must be present. If NetWare 5.x is configured for IPX, and an IPX connection is being used on the client, the Hewlett-Packard Install Network Printer Wizard can be used to create an NDS print queue. If NetWare 5.x is configured for TCP/IP and a TCP/IP connection is being used on the client, the HP Install Network Printer wizard can be used to create an IP print path. This configuration will print directly to the printer, without creating a NetWare print queue. NetWare TCP/IP printing to an HP Jetdirect print server can be accomplished through Novell Distributed Print Services (NDPS). What can be done to speed up printer discovery? Discovery performance will be very slow if your client PC does not have a gateway configured. To configure a gateway, choose "Network" in the Control Panel, and then look at Properties for the TCP/IP protocol. A field for entering a gateway address should be available. See the online help for a more information on TCP/IP and gateways. If the machine running the HP Install Network Printer wizard has an IP subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 (also known as a "Class A" subnet mask), device discovery may take a long time. To improve discovery performance you can manually specify a single device, or change to a non-Class A subnet mask. What is the benefit of creating a shared printer installation program? A shared printer installation program can be created when installing a printer on Windows NT or Windows 2000 and selecting the "Shared as:" option. The shared printer installation program contains specific information about the server and printer. This program simplifies the process of installing the printer on client computers. This program can be sent through e-mail or placed on a shared network drive. When the user runs this program, the printer is automatically installed on the client computer. мЅe#Р R9 7ч,6l,6l66 6 ЊЈ(6ь6˜6Tю6ЈTimes New Roman Symbol Arial MS Sans Serif Symbol ArialTimes New RomanTimes New Roman Courier New ArialHewlett-Packard Install Network Printer Wizard v3.01 ReadMe File Last modified June 25, 2002 Contents: 1. Introduction ****************** The HP Install Network Printer Wizard (INPW) for Windows simplifies the process of installing network printers. This wizard guides you through the process of installing a network printer, including the necessary configuration settings, and completes the installation. ********************** 2. New Features ********************** Common "look and feel" across the two main installation paths, "Configure network settings for me" and "Let me configure my own network settings". The option during the installation to automatically download the latest printer driver for your HP printer is now also available in the "Let me configure my own network settings" installation path. Full support for Windows XP 32-bit *********************************** 3. Supported Environments *********************************** The HP Install Network Printer Wizard is supported in the following environments: Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows XP NetWare 3.11, 3.12, 3.2, 4.11, 4.2, 5.0, 5.1 and 6.0 (Queue Server Mode) TCP/IP and/or IPX/SPX (IPX required for NetWare Queue Server mode printing) HP Jetdirect print servers with a firmware revision of x.03.16 or greater. ( x.06.00 or greater required for NetWare support) ******************************** 4. Driver Installation Tips ******************************** HP Web Driver Updates The latest HP drivers can be easily obtained from either the "Configure network settings for me" or the "Let me configure my own network settings" paths. If your PC is configured for Internet access, and the driver of the printer you want to configure is not on the PC, you will be given the option to let the INPW program go to www.hp.com and automatically download and install the latest version of the driver. Installing the HP DeskJet 990 driver When installing an HP DeskJet 990 with INPW and specifying the driver .INF file, you must select the .INF driver file from the following directory: \ENU\drivers... -or- \FRA\drivers\... [where ENU and FRA are language directories] instead of the .INF driver file in the root directory of the CD. ***************************** 5. Known Limitations ***************************** This section covers the Known Limitations for the two different installation paths of INPW 3.02: "Configure network settings for me" and "Let me configure my own network settings". "Configure network settings for me": Driver download Progress Bar hangs: In some situations while downloading the web requested printer driver, if the network connection is lost, the Progress Bar could hang. You must [CTRL-ALT-DELETE] in order to find and terminate the process. The process to terminate is called "HP Install Network Printer Wizard". After successfully configuring (including setting the IP address) the HP Jetdirect print server on one PC, discovery is unable to find that same Jetdirect print server from a different PC. Solution: power cycle the Jetdirect print server and choose the "Retry" option on the "Identify Printer" screen. "Let me configure my own network settings": NDS localities are not recognized: The HP Install Network Printer Wizard does not recognize the NDS locality object. NDS contexts below the locality object are not displayed. No spaces allowed in a printer's share name: When you enter a share name for a printer, spaces are not allowed. *************************************** 6.
