How to request an IP address, port activation or installation

Please note that Ethernet port activation, Ethernet port installation and IP address requests are three different things and require separate procedures.

For example, if there is a port that already works (other computers were connected to it before) but you have a new computer that you'd like to connect to this port. In this case you need to request a new IP address for your new computer. You have to request a new IP addres for a brand new computer or for a computer that was moved from other floor or from other building. If the computer was connected before to the network on the same floor you don't need to request an IP address for it - the IP will work on the same floor regardless of the port.

NOTE: If this is a new Mac or Windows desktop computer it will have to be set it up by us to make sure it's updated and clean. If it's a personal Windows laptop it will have to be inspected by us before an IP can be issued. If you're bringing a PC from the outside we'll also have to look at it and make sure that it's clean of viruses and has proper updates and antivirus software installed. Please note that due to the fact that we do not provide full support for Windows PCs it will be your responsibility to bring the computer up to date and clean it up I we find it outdated or infected. We require that either latest version of Sophos or Norton (Symantec) is installed. PCs running non-English versions of Windows will not be connected to the network since we're unable to deal with non-English operating systems.

Another example: if your computer already has an IP address and you just want to move it to another location on the same floor and the port is not working. Tyou only need to request a port activation, there is no need for a new IP address.

If you are unsure if the port works then submit port activation/IP request.

To activate an existing Ethernet port in your lab or office
Go to Skirball IT Jobtracker page and report a new problem. Then fill out all the information and then select Port Activation from the Category menu. You will need to know the hardware address of your computer to submit the request. Instructions on how to find out the hardware address of your computer are on this page.

If this is a brand new Apple computer you will find the hardware address, a.k.a. Ethernet ID on a white label on the shipping box Click here for an example.

To install a new Ethernet port in your lab or office
Fill in the new on-line form at this location. Please note that this is a new procedure. IOI forms are no longer accepted. Physical port installation may take several weeks to complete so plan ahead if you can and order the new ports as early as possible. After the contractor installs the new port you will need to submit a port activation request. The contractor only installs the ethernet line and does not connect it to the network switch.

To request an IP address
Go to Skirball IT Jobtracker page and report a new problem. Then fill out all the information and then select IP request from the Category menu. You will need to know the hardware address of your computer to submit the request. Instructions on how to find out the hardware address of your computer are on this page.

If this is a brand new Apple computer you will find the hardware address, a.k.a. Ethernet ID on a white label on the shipping box Click here for an example.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that you are submitting a correct, error-free Ethernet adapter hardware address not the Windows dial-up adapter address! Refer to the above link for instructions. If you submit an incorrect hardware address with typos your IP assignment will not work. If you submit the dial-up adapter address you will need to resubmit the form which may delay the request.

Once you have submitted your request visit this page to learn how to configure your computer.

IMPORTANT: CONTACT THE SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR BEFORE
INSTALLING ANY UNIX SYSTEM OR WIN NT/2000 SERVER IN THE INSTITUTE!
