IP Printing from MacOS 9 (Classic)
The Classic Apple Talk, which allows you to select printers and servers using the Chooser, will be eventually discontinued. Most of you already know how to connect to Saturn using its IP address/DNS name (if you do not, please refer to this page for instructions.)

On this page we will explain to you how to connect to a printer using its IP address.

We have already started moving some of the printers to IP Printing. Those that support IP Printing and had an IP address assigned have the IP address written on a sticker attached to the front of the printer. Some of them don't even appear in the Chooser anymore and you can't configure them using the old method.

In order to use IP Printing your Mac should be running Mac OS 8.5 or higher.

Please note that Splash IP Address has been changed so to be safe just use its DNS name: splash.skb.med.nyu.edu
Godzilla DNS name is godzilla.skb.med.nyu.edu
Users in Skirball can use just splash or godzilla.

You don't need to reinstall the software. Just follow the instrutions starting from here down to create a new Desktop printer.

Please note that Godzilla printer has been replaced. The name and address are still the same but you will need new printer drivers. You can download them from this page. You also need Adobe PS driver from here
NOTE: These instructions also apply to the Xerox color printer in the Digital Media Center, known as Splash. In order to set up your computer to print to Splash, you have to download the Splash Client Installer from here. (Splash drivers for Windows and Adobe PS Driver for Windows are available here.) Quit all your programs, run the Splash Client Installer, reboot your Macintosh and follow the instructions below. Splash specific instructions appear in orange throughout this page!

To connect to a printer over TCP/IP and create a desktop printer you need the Desktop Printer Utility. It is usually located inside Applications (MacOS9)->Utilities folder or under Apple Laser Writer Software in the Apple Extras folder as you can see on the right or, under .
You also need to download the following files to be up-to-date and use Splash.

AdobePS Driver version 8.7 (install after installing Splash Client)
Apple Desktop Printer Utility version 9.1 (works with OS 8.5 and up)

Install Splash Client First, reboot, then install AdobePS 8.7and reboot again. Then use Apple Desktop Printer Utility version 9.1.

If you have problems after installing the Splash software do the following:
- delete your Splash desktop printer
- go to System Folder/Preferences/Printing Preferences and delete AdobePS Preferences .
- in the same Printing Preferences open the Parsed PPD folder and trash anything that has Splash in the name.
- re-build the Splash desktop printer.

If you have problems printing over IP to any printer from Quark, Photoshop, etc. Make sure that it's set to send the job as ASCII, not Binary. This option is in the Printing Dialog window.
Double click on the Apple Desktop Utility to open it.
In the Desktop Printer Utility main window select the following:

- for Godzilla and other Xerox printers select Adobe PS from the drop-down menu and select Printer (LPR) from the list.

- for HP and Apple printers select LaserWriter 8 and Printer (LPR) from the list.

- for Splash: Adobe PS from the drop-down menu and Printer (LPR) from the list.

If you don't have Adobe PS option then you did not install the Adobe PS driver: see above!

Click the OK button to go to the configuration window.

In this window you have to select the printer and its correct description.

You are ready to create the desktop printer icon.

Click the Create button. This will alow you to save the printer and give it a name of your choice.

Go the next step.
Your new Desktop Printer icon will appear on your Mac desktop. Remember, that you only need to do this once. If you have several desktop printers and you want to switch between them, don't go to the Chooser! All you have to do is to click on the printer icon that you want to switch to and, once the printer is highlighted, go to the Printing menu and select Set default printer.
You can also easily select any existing desktop printer from your Control Strip as shown on this picture.
