Adding an IP printer in Mac OSX 10.3
Adding a printer procedure
Locate the Print Center utility in your /Applications/Utilities folder.
Start the Print Center utility and click the Add button as shown on the image on the right. Nothing will happen for a while so just wait patiently. It may be a minute or so before the utility responds again and another windows slides into view.
Click and pull down the top menu and choose IP Printing. proceed to the next step.
Under IP Printing you will have several options. If you know the printer's IP address or its DNS name/address (godzilla.skb.med.nyu.edu for instance) enter it in the Printer's Address box.

For most lab printers the naming usually follows the scheme: piname+lab+ptr, example: joynerlabptr. For color printers it's piname+lab+color, example joynerlabcolor. Or ask us if you're not sure.

If you have received instructions to enter the printing queue then uncheck the checkbox and enter the queue name in the Queue Name box. For most IP printers this is not necessary, such as in case of Godzilla, so leave the checkbox checked and proceed to the next step. In case of Splash, however, you have to use a queue name: splash. Splash's address is splash.skb.med.nyu.edu but you can just type splash in the name filed if you're located in Skirball Institute. Those who attended our networking seminar now why:)
Now, your Mac knows where the printer is but it still doesn't know what kind of printer it is and what it can do. In this step you have to select the printer's description from the drop down menu Printer Model.

As we mentioned in the beginning you may need to download and install printer drivers first! Once you have the driver/descriptions installed you will be able to select the make/brand from the drop down menu, as shown on the right, and then the model from the Printer Model window as shown in the next step.

Select Splash for Splash and HP for Godzilla and other Hewlett Packard printers.
The image on the right shows the Printer Model window. For Splash please choose DocuColor 12 and for Godzilla LaserJet 5000 Series. You must select the correct printer description. If you choose wrong one you may not be able to use all of the printer's options such as duplex, additional trays and prints may not always come out correctly. If you're in a hurry or can't find the right driver select Generic. Click the Add button and you're done.
You should see your newly added printer now in the Print Center utility main window. You can make any printer a default printer by selecting it and clicking the Make Default icon on the toolbar.
Now you can configure the printer's options and make changes if you need. To do so select the printer and click the Show Info icon on the toolbar If you don't have the Show Info button the just type Apple-I or select Show Info from the Printer menu. You can customize the Print Center toolbar and add remove buttons. Go to the View menu and select Customize Toolbar. You can now drag buttons to and from the toolbar to create your own custom button set. This works the same way as customizing the toolbar in Finder windows..
In the resulting window you can change the printer name to something more friendly if you wish.
Now, click the drop-down menu and select Installable Options as shown on the right. Under Installable Options you will see the hardware options that can be configured for this printer. The options available to you are contained in the printer description file. That's another reason why it's important to install the driver and select the exact make and model from the list. If you make incorrect selection you may not see any options here or the options may be wrong.

You have to check Duplex Unit if the printer has one or you will not be able to print double-sided. If the printer has additional trays also check them here to be able to print to them. The trays are usually labeled with their numbers.

The amount of memory the printer has can also be found on the Test Page that you obtain from the printer itself. In case of an HP printer this number is usually on the second page under Memory section as Total Memory. If the number does not reflect the real memory installed in the printer you may experience printing problems!

Other options you may see here will depend on the printer model and you will have to refer to the printer's manual.

Remember to click the Apply Changes button before closing this window and quitting the Print Center utility.
