Adding an IP printer in Mac OSX 10.4
Open your Applications folder and locate Printer Setup Utility, open it...
You may be prompted to add printers if you haven't added any yet. If not just click the Add button.
Click the IP Printer button, do not use the Default Browser window to search for your printer!

In the IP Printer window you will specify the name of your printer...

Protocol must be left at the default: Line Printer Dameon - LPD. Do not selecet anything else! It has to be Line Printer Dameon - LPD! If other option, such as Internet Printing Protocol IPP, is selectet, reselect Line Printer Dameon - LPD or your printer will not work!

In the Address field type the DNS name (address) of your printer. You can also type the IP address if you know it (example. 10.161.122.18).

The naming usually follows the scheme: piname+lab+ptr, example: joynerlabptr. For color printers it's piname+lab+color, example joynerlabcolor. Or ask us if you're not sure.

If you are located in Skirball you don't have to type the whole name with skb.med.nyu.edu, but just the first part just like you do with saturn. Leave the Queue box blank. While you're doing this OSX will verify the address and you should see Valid and complete address just below the Address you've typed in and the type and model of the printer should also be automatically detected in the Print using box. In the Name field you canchange the name to something more descriptive if you'like, My Lab Printer for example.

If it says Invalid or incomplete address, you are not typing the correct address.

Click the Add button.

The next window will show all the options available for your printer and they also should be detected uatomatically. If you know what to change you can do that, if not just leave the defaults. These settings can be changed later.

Click Continue.
This is it. You've added the printer. Now you can select the printer from the list, click the blue Show Info button and rename your printer to anything you'd like if you haven't done so before.
If in the previous steps, the type and model of your printer was not selected automatically and it says Generic PostScript Printer in the Print Using box, you can try selecting it manually by pulling down the menu.
You can select now the make of the printer.
And then the model of the printer.

If you can't find the model you need to install the correct driver for your printer and OSX 10.4.

With Xerox printers it's easy. Open your web broswer and go to:

http://mylabptr.skb.med.nyu.edu/softwareinstallation.html

where "mylabptr" would be the DNS name/address of your pinrter. In there you will find a link to download the drivers.

Quit Printer Setup Utility befor you install the driver. Download and ecxpand the file, run the installer. When you open Printer Setup Utility now you should see the printer model in the drop down menu.
