Setting up an IP printer in Windows XP - Page 1 (works with 2000 as well)
This web page will explain how to properly connect to a standalone network printer from Windows XP/2000 using TCP/IP and LPR.
Locate your Control Panels either by going through the Start Menu or opening My Computer - depending on your Windows configuration. Find the Printers and Faxes Control Panel and open it. 01
Double click the Add Printer icon to open the Add Printer Wizard... 02
Here is the first Add Printer Wizard window, click Next> to proceed... 03
Here is the strangest part of this process: despite the fact that you are adding a network printer you need to chose Local printer attached this computer. By network printer Microsoft means a printer that is connected to a Windows Server not a standalone printer or even a non-Windows print server...

Uncheck the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer.. and click Next>.
04
In the next window you will need to create a new port, a virtual port for those inclined. Click the Create a new port: radio button and select Standard TCP/IP Port from the Type of port: drop-down menu... 06
Yet another wizard greeting... this time it's the Add Standard TCP/IP printer Port Wizard!! Yes, make sure the printer is turned on and your PC is connected to the network because even with all those Wizards you can't expect miracles here, then click Next> 07
In the first box named Printer Name or IP address enter the full DNS name as provided by your network administrator. You can let the Port Name assume the default name or rename it to your liking... 08
You can also use the printer's IP address if you know it. Although, it's recommended to use full DNS names. 09
As pointed out above you can rename the port descriptively: Lab Printer in this example. 10
This completes your encounter with the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard. Congratulations:) Click Finish.

Please go to the next page.
