Finding the hardware address under Mac OSX

Note that OSX 10.2.x and 10.3.x Network Control Panels look different.
Both cases are covered below on this page: 10.2 and 10.3.
Also note that hardawre address is referred to as Ethernet ID or Ethernet Address by Apple!
What this number means is explained briefly here.

If this is a brand new Apple computer you will find the hardware address, a.k.a. Ethernet ID on a white label on the shipping box Click here for an example.
Mac OSX 10.2

Go to the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of your screen and open System Preferences.
When System Preferences window opens click on the Network icon to access the networking options.
In the Network window make sure that Built-in Ethernet is selected in the Show drop-down menu. You will see the hardware address listed as Ethernet Address at the bottom of th window as marked by one of the arrows. When you submit it through the IP request form make sure that you only enter the digits and letters, no colons and no spaces nor dashes.

Mac OSX 10.3 and 10.4

Under OSX 10.3 and 10.4 the TCP/IP Control Panel looks a bit different. You get there the same way as in 10.2 only the contents of the Control Panel are a bit different.


Go to the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of your screen and open System Preferences.

When System Preferences window opens click on the Network icon to access the networking options.

Select Buil-in Ethernet from the Show drop-down menu.














Then click the Ethernet button and the hardware address will be displayed as Ethernet ID as shown on the right.
