FAQ for Win95/Win98

No logon prompt under Win98:

AUTOLOG.INF - REMOVE THE
  AUTOLOGON REGISTRY ENTRY

When you start Windows 98 you may not receive a Windows or Network logon
dialog box. You may also receive one of the following error messages:
No network provider accepted the given network path.

The operation being requested was not performed because the user has not logged on to the
network. The specified service does not exist.

In addition, the Change Passwords tab may be missing from the Passwords
  Properties dialog box.

This behavior can occur if the AutoLogon entry appears in the following registry key:

  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net
      AutoLogon=<x>
          where <x> is a number.
To remove the AutoLogon entry from the registry:

1.Select AUTOLOG.INF found in the \Tools\MTSutil folder on the Windows 98 CD.
    2.Right-Click AUTOLOG.INF.
      -or-
Hold down the SHIFT key and press the function key, F10.
3.Choose INSTALL to remove the AutoLogon entry.

Passwords under Win98:

Microsoft Network (NETBEIU) under Win98 Connection to Samba servers doesn't work because encrypted passwords are not supported by Samba

To fix this:

Add Registry entry:  EnablePlainTextPassword (as a Dword) and set value to 1 (one) in the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP

This can also be done by selecting PTXT_ON.INF in the \Tools\MTSutil folder on the Windows98 CD

To reenable encrypted passwords, set above registry value to zero, or select PTXT_OFF.INF

This information comes from microsoft knowledge base article: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q236/67.asp,
which seems difficult to get to directly.  If was called up by a search for "samba password"

Then get port turned on and request an IP address from Information Services (this is the hardest part!)

Next set up Network in Control Panel:
